For our other previous and current initiatives addressing the 3-month queer blood ban, the experiences of trans and nonbinary blood donors, and the 5-year queer tissue ban, we worked to revised policy from the Food and Drug Administration. The policies were relatively easy to find, analyze, and sort through.
-
While researching the 5-year ban on tissue donations from queer men, we found conflicting information on organ donation.
-
We did find a recommendation from HHS in 2020 that recommends labeling organs from queer men as "IRD" transplants- Increased Risk Donor if the donor had been sexually active in the past 30 days. We don't know how this policy impacts trans and nonbinary donors, or how it is implemented. Right now, we have a lot of questions.
-
From our understanding, this does not prevent queer men from donating organs. The organs will still be harvested regardless of gender, orientation, or sexual activity. However, if a queer man has been sexually active in the past 30 days, the organs will receive the IRD label, and some patients awaiting transplants will not accept the donation due to the label.
-
We will keep you updated with our findings, but for the moment, this is on the back burner. It is something that we have on our radar and is an issue we will advocate for and research just like Blood and Tissue Donation.
